Cornelian (also the American spelling of Carnelian) is part of the Quartz group, a translucent variety of chalcedony. The colour varies from red to shades of orange caused by iron oxide. The name comes from the latin ‘Carnu’ which means horn, due to its resemblance to the color of a ripe corn kernel.
