Berkhamsted Floating Market..My blog of our epic journey!

We’re on our way here next weekend, to sell our lovely handmade jewellery. It’s been an epic journey to get here in time.

We were trapped at the end of the Kennet and Avon Canal for 3 weeks, waiting for the river flooding and strong currents to subside. Our trip to get here included a long section of The Thames which had been closed to traffic for a month. Once we were able to leave, we had to negotiate a fast flowing current and pass overactive weirs which swirled the water round like white water rafting!

Over the last week we’ve travelled 84 miles and dealt with 56 locks, more that we’ve ever done in such a short time. We’ve had narrow misses with hire canoes in the wrong place at the wrong time, met up with a boater friend for coffee as we passed his boat on the Thames, led 2 narrow boats to the entrance of the Grand Union at Brentford which is notoriously easy to miss, had lots of debris and huge tree logs in locks, met a virtual Fb trader friend, got soaked, been shined upon in hot sun and listened to Warbler birdsong on the edge of a wetland nature reserve!

We are now approximately 2 days away from Berkhamsted, with another 22 locks to go. Certainly our muscles have had a workout and we will be glad to arrive and meet all the other traders! A total of 17 boats will be trading with a wide variety of crafts and wares.
